Repondez, S'il Vous Plait ~ plain and simple.. argh!

R.S.V.P. stand for a French phrase, "repondez, s'il vous plait," which means "please reply."  The person sending the invitation would like you to tell him or her whether you accept or decline the invitation.  That is, will you be coming to the event or not?  Etiquette rules followed in most Western cultures require that if you receive a formal, written invitation, you should reply promptly, perhaps that same day.  For hosts who are planning a dinner party, a wedding or a reception, this is important from a practical point of view, because they need to know how many people to count on anyhow much food and drink to buy.  More important, though, is the simple courtesy of responding to someone who was nice enough to invite you, even if it is to say that you regret that you will not be able to attend.

Copied retyped from "howstuffworks.com."

I recently sent invitations out for a dinner party that my LP and I will host in celebration of our 15th Wedding Anniversary.  The invitations went out in a timely fashion and we asked the invitees to R.S.V.P. by January 10, 2014.  To date, only a few people have responded and of the few, only two responded in the manner that was requested of them (via email to a specific email address that both my LP and myself check periodically).  Can I tell you how much this pisses me off... this makes my blood boil.  I don't live in a large house, I cannot grant my guests valet service, or a park on my block for that matter, but I love to entertain.  That being said, when I open my house to entertain, my goal is to always be prepared, properly.  I am praying that those persons who responded positively will be the only invitees at the event.  Technically, all those who have yet to respond have another day, but I am finalizing a menu with caterers and preparing for only the invitees who responded positively.

Would I be wrong to not prepare for others?

  (LP = Life Partner)

Be well good people.

  1. So in essence you are saying I should eat before, pack a snack or plan a late night stop after I leave the Thomas house on Sat - because oh I am coming!!!! Love you!!!
